This post aims at explining the component model proposed by Microsoft, namely, Component Object Model (COM). This technology of Operating Systems enables software components to communicate with each other. The component model evolved from clipboards, which evolved to DDE. OLE 2.0 removed the defects in DDE and later OLE evolved into COM. To enable communication between components in a distributed environment, DCOM was proposed.

The technology proposed by Microsoft to support distributed commerce application is called as Microsoft Destributed Component Architecture (MDCA). MDCA lays out the rules governing software components and their usage in complex commerce system. MDCA uses distributed COM (DCOM) technology.

Microsoft provides COM interfaces for many Windows application programming interfaces such as Direct Show, Media Foundation, Packaging API, Windows Animation Manager, Windows Portable Devices, and Microsoft Active Directory (AD).

COM is used in applications such as the Microsoft Office Family of products. For example COM OLE technology allows Word documents to dynamically link to data in Excel spreadsheets and COM Automation allows users to build scripts in their applications to perform repetitive tasks or control one application from another.

Evolution of DCOM

Initially, clipboard was used as a fundamental method of sharing data between applications on Windows. By using clipboards, the user can copy data from the data provider application onto the data consumer application.

Dynamic data exchange (DDE)(1990) was primarily used for dynamically exchanging data between two applications. The main purpose of this protocol was to think two piece of data dynamically, so that when an item of data in the source document was changed, the changes could updated in the destination document also. It was used by Microsoft office application and Internet browser.

DDE evolved into OLE 1.0. while DDE was limited to transfering limited ammount of data between two running applications, OLE was capable of maintaining active links between two documents or even embedding one type of document within another.

Whenever data was copied onto the clipboard the following information about the source of data was copied onto clipboard.

Presentation data, a meta-file of the data

Class information about the source application

Raw data or a reference of the file providing raw data.

OLE 1.0 evolved into 16-bit OLE 2.0 (1990) in Visual Basic 2.0 and Microsoft Office 4 and then into COM. OLE 2.0 was extended as OLE controls (OCXs) in Visual Basic 4 in 1994. An OCX is implemented as a dynamic link library (DLL).

In 1996 on the “Internet Day”, Microsoft renamed the OLE 2.0 technology to ActiveX, primarily a lightweight COM object. It deals with the active content management of web pages. COM, introduced by Microsoft in 1993, is a platform for software componentry. The foundations for COM ware provided by Antony Williams in 1988.

Along the bumpy roadmap from OLE through COM to ActiveX(according to fig), microsoft industry competitors began working on a distributed object system model called CORBA. As Microsoft’s object system was not distributed, DCOM (1996) was created from COM. It was then included in all version of Windows staring with Windows 98. The COM platform has largely been superesded by the Microsoft .NET initiative as it provides rapid development tools for both Windows Platform and Web forms.

With LightSwitch you can create custom applications for the way you do business.

LightSwitch provides a variety of pre-built templates and tools to build business applications that target Windows Client or Windows Azure using as much or as little code as you want to write.

You can build forms from existing templates and populate them with data from data sources including SQL Server, SQL Azure, SharePoint, and others. There is integrated support for working with Microsoft Office for tasks such as exporting data to Excel without having to write code.

Microsoft says that LightSwitch dramatically decreases the time it takes to build a custom application by automatically handling routine code; it’s a rapid application development tool that offers application shells and screen templates to allow the developer to concentrate on the core business logic.

And testing may be kind of many types like Black-box, White-box, Alpha, Beta, Unit, Milestone etc. Many of the development through Visual Studio 2010 needs to be tested before the actual product launch or distribution.
